Indigo Crosses 100 million passengers per year

The Bharat Tribune 19 Dec, 2023 27468

After successfully transporting 100 million passengers in 2023, IndiGo, India's largest airline, has achieved a significant milestone, placing itself among a select group of global carriers. This accomplishment marks a notable distinction, as only a handful of airlines worldwide have surpassed the 100 million passenger mark in a calendar year, and IndiGo is the first Indian airline to accomplish this feat.

Providing insights into their recent achievements, IndiGo shared, "In the calendar year 2022, the airline warmly welcomed 78 million passengers on board, slightly exceeding pre-Covid-19 levels. IndiGo has also set another milestone for India, becoming the first airline to operate more than 2,000 flights a day. Presently, the airline operates flights to 118 destinations, including 32 international destinations."

IndiGo holds the position of India's largest airline in both the domestic and international segments. Notably, in November, the airline secured a dominant domestic market share, with a passenger market share of 61.8 percent, a figure almost six times higher than the second-ranking Air India. In the international segment, IndiGo maintained a market share of 18.5 percent in July-September among all airlines operating flights to and from India.

As part of its strategic growth plans, IndiGo is actively expanding its network and fleet. Earlier this year, the airline placed a historic aircraft order, acquiring 500 Airbus A320 family planes. Combined with existing orders, IndiGo's total aircraft orders now approach 1,000, with deliveries scheduled well into the next decade.

In the past six months alone, IndiGo has introduced more than 20 new international routes, enhancing both its international and domestic connectivity. Looking ahead, the airline aims to further expand its network by adding destinations such as Bali, Indonesia, and Medina, Saudi Arabia, with a commitment to sustainable growth both financially and environmentally.

The airline's significant aircraft order and rapid network expansion reflect IndiGo's optimism regarding the growth potential of India's aviation market. As the third-largest aviation market globally, India's aviation sector is experiencing rapid growth. IndiGo's increased air passenger traffic mirrors the robust recovery observed in the Indian aviation sector as it emerges from the challenges posed by the pandemic.
